Throughout history, the census has helped groups and nations
acquire and record information. The U.S. Census, which happens
every 10 years, is mandated by our Constitution. There are inherent
problems, however, with several issues you should answer for
yourself before proceeding with any census worker or form.
THIS WEEK IN HISTORY—Did you know...?
  • In 1947 The Best Years of Our Lives won seven Oscars, including both
Best Picture and Best Actor. Who was that Academy Award-winning
    actor?
  • Neil Simon's The Odd Couple opened this week on Broadway during
1965, featuring the story of Felix Ungar, the neurotic, neatnick newswriter,
who was thrown out by his wife, and moved in with Oscar Madison, a
slovenly sportswriter. Who first played Felix and Oscar on Broadway?
  • Three's Company made its debut on ABC during this week in 1977. Who
played the three lead roles? BONUS: Which male lead had famous
    parents?
                                                                   ANSWERS BELOW
Answers to THIS WEEK...
  • Frederic March won his Oscar for his role as Al Stephenson in the
powerful story about three servicemen trying to piece their lives back
together after coming back home from World War II.
  • On Broadway, Felix Ungar was played by Art Carney, and Oscar Madison
by Walter Matthau. Matthau was later replaced by Jack Klugman.
  • John Ritter, Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers shared apartment 201.
The sitcom, despite many cast changes, ran from 1977 to 1984. Jonathan
    Southworth “John” Ritter (September 17, 1948 – September 11, 2003) was
an American actor and comedian perhaps best known for playing Jack
Tripper in Three's Company, but he was also distinguished because of his
parents. His mother Dorothy Fay was an actress in such movies as
Frontier Scout with Buck Jones, The Philadelphia Story with Cary Grant,
Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart, and four movies with her husband,
including Song of the Buckaroo, Sundown on the Prairie, Rollin' Westward
and Rainbow Over the Range. His father Tex Ritter starred in over 40
"singing cowboy" Western movies, and recorded numerous major country
and pop hits, including "Jingle, Jangle, Jingle," "Rye Whiskey" and "High
Noon (Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darlin')."
